Master of Arts in Ministry - Spiritual Formation

The Master of Arts in Ministry student is assisted in his or her formation in particular by the ministry of a spiritual director. It is through frequent conversation with this director that the student has the graced opportunity to grow in self-knowledge and self-acceptance, to discern better the desires of his or her heart, and to respond more generously to the mystery of God's grace. Monthly gatherings for prayer and formation workshops also make available resources that help deepen attentiveness to the mystery of God's presence and power. An annual class retreat at the opening of the school year, as well as individually scheduled retreats during the school year, are key elements of the spiritual direction process.

The following assumptions provide a context for the development of the elements of spiritual formation:
  • That the program is intended for lay men and women
  • That students participate actively and regularly in the sacramental life of their local parishes
  • That students come with a wide range of ecclesial and ministerial experience
  • That the Roman Catholic tradition with the Eucharist as its center is the rich foundation of spiritual life
  • That spiritual direction involves both individual and corporate dimensions
